Lei Your Weapons Down And Walk Away

Looks like the latest update to the operating system on the Playstation 3 has finally allowed me to play Tekken 5 Online. Hopefully they'll release an update to fix the players too.

I'm not sure if it was the recent update to the Playstation 3's operating system or something else entirely, but I'm (mostly) happy to say that I've finally gotten my copy of Tekken Online to actually work online!

Any of you that know me personally will know that I used to love playing Tekken regularly with a long-time mate of mine. You may also know that I'd bought this latest version of Tekken about four months ago for £15. A bargain — I thought. That was, of course, until I found that it didn't actually work online on my console. Every time I'd join a game, everyone in the game would just disappear one-by-one until I was the only one left and then it would inform me that something went wrong and eject me back to the title screen: not really something you want to see from a game you've just paid 15 quid for when you're already broke. Given that there was no indication of a refund policy and there seemed no way at all of fixing it, I simply considered myself screwed over and gave up on the idea of ever getting it to work.

I don't know why, but last night I decided to just try it out again to see if it would connect. To my amazement, it did! So I can at last play my old favourite once more. The only down-side now is that instead of playing good, fun games with my mate, I now mostly end up playing with ranking- and statistics-obsessed children who'd much rather do pretty much anything to get a win and boost their statistics, then enjoy a nice, friendly, fun battle to the death. So getting thrown out of a game because you're about to win a game against the player that's hosting the match is, sadly, commonplace. There's also the problem of timing. A game like Tekken rather hinges on accurate timing of commands to end up doing what you mean to do, but thanks to the lack of compensation against the latency, pulling off even some of the basic fundamental moves can prove difficult.

I'll still keep plugging away for now, though. I tend to go with the thinking that if you are patient enough, you're bound to find someone that plays fun and fair and has a decent connection to you. I guess time will tell. Perhaps I may see some of you in the ring so you can marvel at my amazing Lei Wulong antics. Here's to hoping!

Authored by Stephen Philbin.
