Reconstruction Almost Going To Plan
A few years ago I lost a considerable amount of know-how on a number of subjects including very basic Mathematics, Physics and Web Development. I recovered a pretty good amount of what I had lost fairly quickly, however I didn't realise just how much I had lost on the subject of Web Development until I came back to it recently. It feels like I'm starting almost from square-1 again; the difference this time being that I'm starting with a magically intuitive understanding of many concepts. It's incredibly annoying to have to re-learn so much of what I had spent so many years learning, but on the other hand I am very thankful that I am still able to do so at all.
I know it'll seem incredibly stupid to most Web Developers, but I forgot just how much was involved in just making a website as simple as this. That I'd have to design a database to store my user data, these entries that I write and other supporting meta-data. That I'd have to make quite a few pages that you tend not to really think about, such as login and admin menu pages and the like. I also decided to have a look through some old code and see if there was anything I could tidy up and re-use, but there wasn't much to salvage because I decided to massively simplify the site compared to it's previous incarnation and just get the basics working to start with. At the moment the site looks extremely basic it it probably wont get much of an overhaul for quite some time. I still have some basic functionality to fix before I move on to other things. For example this website just appears as a blank page when viewed in the Konqueror Web Browser (and probably a few others too) because of a bug in the content negotiation I've made and implemented in the site, but not yet finished.
I don't really know what to do next after fixing the content negotiation bug because it feels like there's so much to do. I have some old Java programs that could do with tidying up and improving, but I suspect a significant portion of my efforts will probably have to go into making basic site admin tools like making an admin control panel for a start. Hopefully I get on to doing something a bit more interesting soon.
